ASTM A572 / A 572M - 07 covers the standard requirements for Grades 42, 50, 55, 60, and 65 for high-strength low-alloy columbium-vanadium structural steel shapes, plates, sheet piling, and bars for applications in bolted riveted, and welded structures in bridges and in buildings. The steel shall be semi-killed or killed. Precision Grinding purchases steel plate from well-known manufacturers from across the world. The use of columbium, vanadium, titanium, nitrogen, or combinations thereof shall meet the requirements of those producers and these specifications. A572 Gr. 50 and Gr. 42 steel plates and shapes from Precision Grinding, Inc. meet these specifications. Please, visit www.astm.org for a complete list of specifications for ASTM grades of plate.
| Grade of Steel | Max Thickness | Carbon Max | Manganese Max | Phosphorus Max | Sulfur Max | Yield Point Min ksi | Yield Point Min [MPa] | Tensile Strength ksi | Tensile Strength [MPa] |
| A572 42 | 6" | 0.21 % | 1.35 % | 0.04 % | 0.05 % | 42 | [290] | 60 ksi | [415] |
| A572 50 | 4" | 0.23 % | 1.35 % | 0.04 % | 0.05 % | 50 | [345] | 65 ksi | [450] |
Of interest to note from ASTM specifications: The min. yield points covered by Grades 42 [290], 50 [345] and 60 [415] are the yield strengths most closely approximating a geometric progression pattern between those min. yield points between 36ksi, ASTM A36 [250MPa] and 100ksi, ASTM A514 [690 MPa].

Other common, similar HSLA chemistry plates include AISI 1018 and ASTM A588. 1018 steel is a carbon/manganese based specification that precludes the addition of columbium and vanadium. Higher yield strength grades with minimum yields from 45 ksi - 70 ksi may be specified as 1018 HSLAS. A588 is normally specified when greater corrosion resistance properties are required. ASTM A588/A 588M specifications cover up to 8 inches thick. Specification A588 should not be substituted for A572 without agreement between parties.
